BEIJING – Chris Colwill (Brandon, Fla./Athens, Ga.) and Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif./Austin, Texas) have advanced to Tuesday morning’s semifinals (10 a.m.) after placing in the top 18 in the preliminaries Monday night at the National Aquatic Center.
Colwill was seventh with 464.75 points, and Dumais was 12th with 448.40 points, although both divers have room for improvement.
Colwill, for instance, scored just 67.50 points on his first dive, putting him in 25th place after round one. He scored more than 80 points on three other dives, including 84 apiece on his last two dives – a reverse 2 ½ pike with 1 ½ twists and a reverse 3 ½ tuck.
“I was definitely a little nervous on that first dive, but I felt confident. I definitely could have done a little better, but I can’t complain (about his position),” Colwill said.
Dumais had the second highest scoring dives in both the second and third rounds, earning 80-plus points on both his front 3 ½ pike and his front 2 ½ with 2 twists, but was in last place after round one with just 63 points on his back 2 ½ pike. He also struggled with his fifth round dive, earning just 68.25 points on his reverse 3 ½ tuck.
“I didn’t perform my dives the way I have the past six or seven weeks. I don’t want to have an off day, but I’ll change the channel and regroup,” Dumais said.
China took the top two spots in the prelims, with He Chong leading the field at 515.50 and Qin Kai second at 502.95. Mexico’s Yahel Castillo was third at 480.65.
Scores from the preliminaries do not carry over. Divers will start the semis at zero and will dive in reverse order of their preliminary finish. The top 12 divers in the semis will dive in the finals, set for 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
