Michelle Cabassol (pictured here during the 2008 USA Diving Olympic Team Trials) earned her first bronze medal in senior-level international competition.
MONTREAL – One week after winning two senior national titles, 16-year-old Michelle Cabassol (Montgomery, Texas) claimed her first senior international medal with a bronze medal on women’s platform Saturday at the FINA Canada Cup.
Cabassol totaled 328.85 points for the bronze, scoring 75 or more points on two of her dives, an inward 3 ½ and a back 2 ½ with 1 ½ twists. Canadian Olympians Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion won gold and silver.
Also on Saturday, Abby Johnston (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Durham, N.C.) and Victoria Ishimatsu (Seal Beach, Calif./Los Angeles, Calif.) finished fourth with 276.30 points in the women’s 3-meter synchro contest, which was won by Australia’s Briony Cole and Sharleen Stratton.
The U.S. closes out Canada Cup competition Sunday when Johnston dives in the women’s 3-meter finals after finishing fourth overall in Friday’s semifinals. Ishimatsu just missed joining Johnston in the finals when she finished seventh with 288.40 points, less a point from advancing, in the semis.
On Thursday, Burkley Showe (Columbus, Ohio) placed seventh in the men’s 3-meter with 393.15 points, and Victoria Lamp (Knoxville, Tenn.) made her senior international debut by finishing 11th on platform with 269.30 points.
