U.S. wins two more medals in Mexico City; event closed to spectators

MEXICO CITY - U.S. divers won two medals Saturday at the final leg of the 2009 FINA Diving World Series, which was closed to spectators due to the flu outbreak spreading through Mexico. Chris Colwill (Brandon, Fla./Athens, Ga.) and Jevon Tarantino (Boca Raton, Fla./Knoxville, Tenn.) took silver in men's synchronized 3-meter, and Kelci Bryant (Chatham, Ill./Indianapolis, Ind.) won her second World Series bronze on 3-meter. The medals were the second and third for the U.S. in Mexico City (David Boudia and Thomas Finchum won bronze on 10-meter synchro Friday). In all, the U.S. won six medals in three World Series events in 2009. The World Series is an invitation-only event featuring the top divers from the 2008 Olympic Games. Colwill and Tarantino, who were fifth a week ago in Great Britain, picked up a silver in Mexico with 397.50 points. Great Britain's Ben Swain and Nicholas Robinson-Baker scored 418.65 for gold. Bryant scored 311.10 to claim another bronze on women's 3-meter; she was also third in Great Britain last week. China's He Zi (357.90) and 2008 Olympic silver medalist Yulia Pakhalina of Russia (344.05) finished ahead of her. USA's Ariel Rittenhouse (Santa Cruz, Calif./Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) was eighth at 252.00. Finchum (Indianapolis, Ind.) also advanced to Saturday's individual 10-meter finals, where he scored 453.85 points for fourth. China's Huo Liang took gold with 553.75 points.
