USA wins nine medals - including three gold - on opening day of Junior Pan American Championships

CALGARY, CANADA – Team USA opened the 2009 Junior Pan American Championships with a successful first day of competition, winning nine medals in six events Thursday. Loren Figueroa (Kingwood, Texas), Steele Johnson (Carmel, Ind.) and Brooke Madden (Richmond, Ind.) won gold medals, and the U.S. came away with two silvers and four bronze medals as well.

Figueroa captured the 16-18 girls’ 1-meter title with 411.65 points, and USA’s Laura Ryan (Elk River, Minn.) scored 404.40 points to give the U.S. a bronze on that same event.

Madden led a one-two U.S. finish in the girls’ 11-under 3-meter contest. She scored 247.40 points for the win, with teammate Alison Maillard (Houston, Texas) picking up the silver after finishing with 238.30 points.

Johnson scored 351.80 points to win the 12-13 boys’ platform title; he also won the gold on this event in the 11-under age group in 2007.

The U.S. picked up a pair of medals in the girls’ 14-15 platform contest. Annika Lenz (Altadena, Calif.) scored 336.40 for silver, with teammate Lilly Hinrichs (Lincoln, Neb.) winning bronze at 332.35.

David Bonuchi (Columbia, Mo.) won the bronze with 532.35 points in the boys’ 16-18 3-meter event, and Michael Hixon (Amherst, Mass.) scored 407.65 points for a bronze in the 14-15 boys 1-meter contest.

Dashiell Enos (Indianapolis, Ind.) placed fourth in the boys’ 12-13 platform competition, and two other divers earned sixth-place finishes. Bradley Christensen (Southlake, Texas) was sixth on 1-meter in the boys 14-15 age group, and Ford McLiney (Kansas City, Mo.), who took sixth in the boys 16-18 3-meter

The Junior Pan American Championships continue through Sunday, September 13.
